A Life Built on Purpose is a Great Life

Thursday, August 7th, 2008
The most important component of a good life is an awareness of one’s life purpose. A life built on purpose is meaningful and filled with the positive emotions of satisfaction, fulfillment, and joy. Completing a meaningful task, an activity

that is well-aligned with life purpose is a joy.The ultimate good life is a life built entirely around purpose; when work life, home life, and play are all aligned around aspects of one’s life purpose it just doesn’t get any better. That indeed, is the overall purpose of life.We all, at some time or another in our lives, will ask the questions: “Who am I and why am I here? What is my purpose? What is life all about?” We may ask these questions in different forms, but the underlying quest is the same, to understand our reason for being alive.

Congratulations to those who have a good handle on your life purpose. You’re fortunate and blessed to have reached that clarity.

What if You Haven’t Yet Found Purpose”?

But if you are among the majority who haven’t yet found your life purpose, there are lots resources to help you. My own Balanced Life E-course has an entire section on life purpose. You can find more at The Balanced Life E-course.

There are many books on the subject. Two that I recommend are Brad Swift’s Life on Purpose, six passages to an inspired life and Diane Dreher’s Your Personal Renaissance, 12 steps to finding your life’s true calling. The links lead to my reviews of each book.

Keep in mind that life purpose has little to do with what you do and everything to do with who you are being when you do what you do. That sounds circuitous, but it means that life purpose is more about the qualities you display when you do things than what you are doing. Purpose is always defined by states of being, such as helpfulness, generosity, curiosity, adventurous, creativity, etc.

Two Clues to Your Life Purpose

Here are two clues to help you move toward greater awareness of life purpose. One is follow your joy. The second is follow your energy. They will both lead you to the same place, but you may find one approach easier than the other. When you feel good, anywhere from joyous to mildly contented, you’re aligned with some aspect of life purpose. Be aware of the qualities you’re displaying when you catch yourself feeling good. Make a list of these and reflect on the list over time. When you have lots of energy, jumping out of bed eager to get on with some activity you have planned for the day, that too is a good indicator that the activity is giving you an opportunity to align with your life purpose. Keep a record of the times when you are very energetic and enthused by what you are doing. Note the qualities you’re displaying during those times. Again, reflect over time looking for trends.

The Balanced Life E-course

In addition to a section on Life Purpose, the ten week Balanced Life E-course will help you clarify your Passions, Powers, Principles, and Perspectives. All of which are important building blocks of a good life. The course is still available at a 50% discount during this introductory phase.
